Summer trip!
With the initial plans for visiting the Kennet and Avon Canal postponed until 2008 due to the floods, I headed North. The first visit was up the Trent and Mersey to Anderton and the experience of the Anderton Boat Lift onto the River Weaver described by the lift operatoras 'the inland waterway's best kept secret.' He was right! a beautiful river which we completed, (both left and right from the lift!) in a few days.
We then travelled back round to the Shropshire Union via the Middlewich Branch and turned right to go to Ellesmere Port. (I know we could have done the Manchester Ship Canal but lost our nerve!) A quick visit to the boat museum before returning the full length of the Shropshire Union and then an interesting experience travelling into Birmingham before returning home via the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal and the Wolverhampton 21 flight!
Total miles travelled - 404
Total locks completed - 266
Total time cruised - 4 weeks!
